This is the most popular Fraser tartan today. In 'The Clan and Family Tartans of Scotland' (1850) W and A Smith wrote: 'We addressed Lord Lovat on the subject of the Frazer Tartan – ‘We took a great deal of trouble to find the old set, and I ascertained, from the evidence of old people and old plaids, that the Frazer Tartan, previous to the year 1745, was the same pattern I now send you.' Despite this claim, there is no evidence of this design before the Vestiarium Scoticum, 1842.
